FS1 Age in UAE: Cut Off Rules for School Entry

The FS1 age in UAE is three years old by 31 December of the admission year, for schools whose academic year starts in August or September. The same 31 December rule sets the entry age for FS2, Year 1 and Year 2. This guide explains the cut off for each stage, who it applies to and how to plan your child’s first school place.

What Is the FS1 Age in UAE?

FS1, or Foundation Stage 1, is the first year of the Early Years Foundation Stage in British curriculum schools. Under the UAE admission rules, a child must turn three on or before 31 December of the year they join.

The table shows the entry age for each early year group in schools that start in August or September.

British year group Other curricula Age by 31 December
FS1 Pre KG 3
FS2 KG1 4
Year 1 KG2 5
Year 2 Grade 1 6

Because the cut off falls in December, some children start FS1 in late August while they are still two and turn three during the first term. The full progression from FS1 to Year 13 is set out in our guide to British curriculum stages.

What Changed in the Age Cut Off?

The UAE moved the official age cut off from 31 August to 31 December of the admission year. The change applies from the 2026/27 academic year to schools and kindergartens whose year begins in August or September.

Schools that start their academic year in April, which includes many Indian curriculum schools, keep 31 March as their cut off.

The practical effect is that children born between September and December now join a year group earlier than before, so each class can include children born across a wider range of months.

Who the New FS1 Age Rules Apply To

The new cut off applies to new admissions only. Children already enrolled in a school continue in their current year group and are not moved.

For the first year of the change, children born between 1 September and 31 December 2022 who were not yet enrolled anywhere could be placed in FS1 or FS2, depending on the school’s view of their readiness. From the 2027/28 academic year, all new registrations follow the 31 December cut off strictly.

Meeting the age requirement makes a child eligible, but it does not guarantee a place. Admission still depends on seat availability and each school’s process.

FS2 Age and Starting School in FS2

For FS2, a child must be four years old by 31 December of the admission year. Many families in Dubai and Sharjah choose a nursery for the first year and start school in FS2, especially when FS1 places are limited.

If your child starts in FS2, the school will focus on settling them into routines alongside children who may already have completed FS1. Ask how the school supports new joiners in the first weeks, since this matters more than which year group your child starts in.

Is Your Child Ready for FS1?

Age is only one part of readiness. Teachers in the early years also look at how a child communicates, plays with others and manages simple routines.

Signs that a child is ready for FS1 include:

  • being comfortable spending a few hours away from parents
  • beginning to use words or gestures to express needs
  • showing interest in stories, songs and play with other children
  • managing simple self care, such as washing hands, with help

A child born in November or December will be among the youngest in the class. That is normal, and good early years teaching adapts activities to each child’s stage rather than their exact age.

How to Plan Your Child’s FS1 Admission

  1. Check the date of birth against the cut off. Confirm which year group your child is eligible for in the year you plan to apply.
  2. Apply early. FS1 places at popular schools often fill well before the academic year begins.
  3. Prepare the documents. Most schools ask for the birth certificate, passports, Emirates IDs and vaccination records.
  4. Attend the visit or assessment. Early years assessments are usually informal observations through play.
  5. Confirm the place. Pay the registration fee and complete the school’s enrolment steps within its deadline.

Requirements can differ between schools and emirates, so always check the details with the admissions team of each school you apply to.
